Career Summary

Bill Parcells was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1980 to 2010, finishing his career as the executive vice president of football operations of the Miami Dolphins. Over his twenty-six years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 229-178-1. During his career he was a head coach for nineteen seasons, first with the New York Giants. He led the Giants for eight seasons, compiling a record of 77-49-1. During his time leading the Giants the team won the Super Bowl in 1986 and 1990. He resigned from the Giants. His next head coaching stint was with the New England Patriots from 1993 to 1996, as he led the team to a 32-32-0 record. His third head coach placement began in 1997 with the New York Jets. He coached them for three seasons and the team had a 29-19-0 record during his tenure. He resigned from the Jets. His last opportunity as head coach began in 2003 with the Dallas Cowboys. He coached them for four seasons and the team had a 34-30-0 during his tenure with the team. He retired from the Cowboys on Monday, January 22, 2007. During his entire head coaching career, his four teams combined for a record of 172-130-1 across nineteen seasons including going 11-8-0 in the playoffs.

Parcells was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013 after his coaching career.

Career Awards

Parcells won the NFL's Coach of the Year award two times throughout his career, most recently in 1994 after guiding the Patriots to a 10-6-0 record and a berth in the playoffs. During his time as defensive coordinator and head coach he coached three players to award-winning seasons. As the defensive coordinator for the Giants Lawrence Taylor won AP Defensive Player of the Year (2) and AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. As the head coach for the Giants Lawrence Taylor won AP Defensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player and Ottis Anderson won Comeback Player of the Year. As the head coach for the Patriots Curtis Martin won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Bill Parcells Coaching Tree

Before he was a head coach, Parcells served as an assistant coach for Ron Erhardt and Ray Perkins. Two of these years were spent on Perkins' coaching staff. During his time as head coach, fourteen assistant coaches, (Bill Belichick, Romeo Crennel, Ray Handley, Tom Coughlin, Al Groh, Chris Palmer, Todd Haley, Eric Mangini, Sean Payton, Tony Sparano, Mike Zimmer, Anthony Lynn, Todd Bowles, and Freddie Kitchens) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches across the league. His coaching tree has combined for a record of 918-778-1 in the regular season and 56-37 in the playoffs during their one hundred and eight seasons as head coach after serving on his coaching staffs. The coaching tree has combined for nine championships, most recently in 2018 by the New England Patriots, led by Bill Belichick.

Playing Career

He was drafted in the seventh round with the eighty-ninth pick in the 1964 draft to play linebacker for the Lions.

Personal Information

Parcells was born on Friday, August 22, 1941 in Englewood, New Jersey. He graduated from Wichita State University before embarking on his coaching career. He has two brothers, Doug and Don. He was married to Judith Goss from 1962 to 2002 and has three daughters.
