Colored Contact Lenses FAQS

Is it safe to wear colored contact lenses?

It is safe to wear colored contact lenses as long as the correct safety procedures are followed. Firstly, make sure you are purchasing your colored contacts from a reputable seller that has the appropriate certification such as FDA Approved Colored Contacts. This is especially important if you are buying your contact lenses online as it can be easy to set up a shop without following regulations. Here, at Coloured Contacts, we make sure to keep all our certificates up to date and only use trusted suppliers such as Chromaview, Freshlook, and Air Optix. Next, make sure the lenses match your eye requirements, even if they are non prescription colored contacts. The base curve and diameter need to match your contact lens fitting for a comfortable experience.

If you are buying prescription colored contacts make sure to only choose lenses that exactly match your prescription strength. The power is available in .25 increments but you also need to check details such as whether you have astigmatism and whether you need a Plus or Minus prescription. This refers to shortsighted and longsighted prescriptions.

The final important step is to make sure to follow guidance on the preparation, wear, and storing of your colored eye contacts. You will need to soak your lenses for at least 2 hours in fresh contact lens solution before wearing them.

Can I wear colored contacts all day?

You can wear colored contacts all day but you may prefer to practice wearing them for shorter periods of time, if you are new to wearing contact lenses. Only wear your color contact lenses for up to 8 hours per day whether that is for a party at night or a natural color change during the day. Then store reusable contact lenses in contact lens solution ready for the next day. Make sure to never sleep while wearing your colored contacts, even for a short nap. Can you wear colored contact lenses over normal ones?

You must never wear colored contact lenses over your normal contact lenses. It can be tempting to buy a pair of non prescription lenses to wear over your regular clear prescription contacts but this is not safe for your eyes. It not only significantly restricts airflow to your eyes, but it also increases the thickness of your lenses and can potentially damage your eyes. You will find, as colored contacts grow in popularity, more prescription colored contact options are available so you can get the best of both in a single contact lens.

How long do color contacts last?

Color contacts can last a long time if you choose reusable lenses or can be for a one-off event if you choose single-use. Take note of the duration of your color lenses and also check the expiry date of your lenses. If they are daily one day lenses you can only wear them once as they only have enough durability for a single use. If you have chosen reusable contact lenses such as 30 day monthly lenses, you can wear them multiple times if the colored contacts are correctly stored. The duration starts from the first time you open the lenses and refers to calendar days rather than uses.

Can you see with colored contacts?

You can see with colored contacts if you choose a style that has a clear pupil hole. However, you may experience tunnel vision when your pupil dilates or a halo effect at the edge of your vision. Only some colored contact lens wearers experience this effect but this phenomenon is the reason it is best not to drive while wearing colored contacts.

If you choose a design such as blind effect or mesh lenses then your vision will be restricted when you wear your colored contact lenses. The design covers the iris and pupil with pigment therefore restricting or completely blocking vision. You may be able to see light through the lenses but won’t be able to see clearly. These types of lenses are perfect for photoshoots.

If you are planning to wear your contact lenses out to a party or event, you may find the best colored contacts for you have a clear pupil hole so you don’t restrict your vision. As a compromise, some SFX makeup artists will wear a blind effect lens in one eye and a lens with a clear pupil hole in the other, allowing you to see out of one eye.

With safety at the forefront of everything we do at Coloured Contacts, we will leave you to enjoy choosing the perfect color and design for your next idea. Whether you want to add something new to your everyday look or are planning for your next cosplay or Halloween costume, there’s a pair of colored contact lenses waiting for you in our collection.
