You look for batteries and discover the battery box missing – and the missing box has the custom wiring and connectors – which cost over $200 without batteries!

After putting the new batteries in, surprise! It still doesn't run right. What a mess!

They said "it ran when it was parked" and wasn't plugged in so the batteries must have gone bad.
Of course, the batteries are bad. But what else has gone bad?

Can’t find reverse? Many inexpensive scooters are modified children’s toys and do not have a powered reverse!

Even “Honest” dealers are selling recalled products and non-serviceable products over 14-years old. i.e.: Pride Go-Go’s with molded tires on non-serviceable rims. Dirty brake switches that cause five beep error, motor dragging and premature breakdown. Mismatched 2-Amp chargers on 12Amp-hour batteries that get overheated and melt to the battery case. Or worse – sealed lightweight transaxle right-rear brass bushings that disintegrate, drag, squeal and eat the axle away until the right rear wheel falls off. One must assume these dealers just don’t know, care to know… or just want to sell you a new scooter?

Then you consider buying on-line. It seems cheaper, right? Then you find a whopping +20% restocking fee, added taxes, it isn’t assembled or adjustable. But the biggest issue is that it is not “Durable Medical Equipment” [DME], it is a consumer item that is not supported despite warranties made.
Note the fine print! DME that is serviceable must be supported for 7-years and is often replaced every 61 months for those who have a qualifying medical need and great insurance. Consumer items are ‘type accepted’ by the FDA for over-the-counter sales and are not required to support or maintain parts to service their equipment! (Think aspirin versus oxycodone.)

The 9 to 5 retail mobility dealer that fixes them and accepts Medicare or Medicaid, and therefore must follow Medicare and Medicaid rules and overhead, says either "it's over 5-years old and we can't get parts [from the manufacturer] for it." or wants to charge you a left foot, right eye and half your liver to fix it... which is likely why you need the power mobility device in the first place.

While this information has come to you through no minimal investment of time, money and more time, you find yourself asking “What do I do with my 'mobility project' that was intended to make my life easier? ” Not to mention the family and friends that were counting on you making life easier on them as well.
